Isolation Art
April 2020
I rarely analyze my work as I prefer to leave it to the viewer to form their own experience. However, with so much uncertainty and chaos around us during this unprecedented time I want to share a little more about this series.
As my family isolated from our surroundings like so many all over the globe, I listened to the fear and anxiety from family afar, friends as well as the media. However as with many challenges I believe in the darkest hours are often when we learn to see light. I believe this could be a time for, introspection, reflection and growth. Being isolated in our separate circles force us to reconsider our connectedness with those closest to us. I see relationships strengthen and ‘spiral upwards’. I see us finding family time we never have before and appreciate things we overlooked.
In this “Isolation’ series, symbols for growth used are circles, spirals, vertical lines, ladders and leaves. Yellow is the colour of hope/happiness and frequented inside the circles (which represents the self/immediate family). White represent goodness and new beginnings. Blue, often used for the circle structures recedes and are associated with trust, depth and stability. Structures, like our relationships are complex, occasionally with a sense of movement. Many of these pieces also feature written phrases or ideas I found inspiring or anchoring in this challenging time. Almost all my work expand beyond the canvas over the edges as I believe the ideas continue. However, the edges on these are all painted with solid colours emphasizing on the isolation we currently experience.
