Back from the Big Apple
Pinch me! Could everything that has been happening to me be real? During the five days of the New York Artexpo I have been contacted by seven new galleries –two of which already purchased several pieces. I have also been talking with De Montfort Fine Art about distribution in the United Kingdom, art agents from as far as Germany and a publisher affiliated with Masterpiece Publishers. Where should I begin? Which way should I turn first?
For now I just have the overwhelming desire to say; thank you and thank you. I feel I am one of the most fortunate artists out there since I have been carried by the most amazing support from collectors and art enthusiasts when I needed it most. Every time I did not know how I was going to survive one more day, a beautiful, encouraging letter or email would arrive lifting me right up and putting me back on my way. Every time I did not know how I was going to cover the rent, someone came around and gave me some of their hard earned money in exchange for something I created.
I am gradually experiencing more and more pressure from galleries to stop dealing with the public directly. However I am standing firm because without you, my support base, I would never have been anywhere near where I am today.
New Works
As with every solo exhibition I have of course also released a number of new works.
These are two pieces form part of a new ‘Weightless’ series I am working on. Since I became a BodyFlow instructor a few months ago, I have been drawn to pushing some of the limits in regards to form and space. I have also been inspired to express the freedom of the mind and body without the laws of physics.

I am a big believer that drawing is the most important fundamental for any artist to master before attempting any other medium. I strongly recall the frustration I experienced in art class after the 100th drawing we had to do without being allowed to touch a paintbrush. Today I am grateful and I make a point of putting a considerable amount of time aside to practicing drawing.
This specific piece is about my relationship with my husband. Besides of course using our figures as reference, I also attempted capturing the complexity of relationships, I was meditating on how two people can be strong for one another in different times, be there for one another in different times and sometimes get so close that one is not sure where the one person stops and the next begins. |

For about two years I’ve had visions of a new concept coming to mind, but it took this long before I started being able to put the concept down. It is something I am only at the very early stages of developing but a direction I plan to explore much more. The concept is to combine my love for drawing with my painting but focus mainly on capturing the core essence of my subject.
The wonderful model for these two pieces were once again my friend Ben. Although these were born out of a series Ben and I did several years ago, the inspiration for these two pieces lies in Ben’s personal life. Without going into detail, Ben is currently going through a particularly challenging time which I was relating to. I put much of what I felt and imagined him experiencing into this two pieces. |
